Canine scabies or sarcoptic mange mites can infest your puppy or dog and their presence on your dogs skin can lead to several other skin conditions if not treated.
Hair loss and severe itching can result which in turn can lead to excessive scratching or licking which can cause bacterial and fungal infection.
Sarcoptic mange mites burrow under the skin causing intense itching similar to human scabies. They can also live off your dog for long periods which can allow your dog to become re-infested without coming into contact with another infested dog.
Symptoms of canine scabies can include hair loss on elbows, ears, chest and belly, and can spread to other parts of the body.
The severe itching is thought to be an allergic reaction to the mite, similar to flea allergy, and it can become more severe each successive time that your dog is infested with this mite.
Diagnosis of canine scabies is very difficult, as it is in humans due to the mite living under the skin, usually a scraping is examined under a microscope, but frequently the mites are not discovered.
Treatment options:
A simple, effective and natural way to protect your puppy or dog from canine scabies is to add Manuka and Tea Tree oil to the final rinse following shampooing of your dog. These natural essential oils are combined in a formula that will provide natural protection for your dog. A few drops can also be put on your dog’s leather collar which will support the rinsing method.
Manuka and Tea Tree oil also comes in a convenient cream formulation which can be applied lightly to your dogs coat before he or she meets up with other dogs to prevent scabies transfer from another animal, or from a place where they may be present.
Using natural Manuka and Tea Tree products to control canine scabies on your dog means that you won’t have to constantly use synthetic chemicals that can cause side effects in many sensitive dogs.
To protect and enhance your dog’s immune system especially if your dog is suffering from anemia, a daily supplement of New Zealand Deer Velvet will provide a balanced intake of essential nutrients.
