Anyone that has ever been 'owned' by a dog knows just how much love and satisfaction you experience from this fabulous bond of unconditional love and enjoyment. He is your loyal companion, will love you until the end and doesn't see (or care) about any of your 'bad' faults, and as long as you provide him with a healthy balanced diet, clean water, safe and secure shelter, regular vet care, exercise and companionship, you can enjoy a lifetime of 'bestie friend' with your furry buddy!
So what makes a great dog owner? Besides returning that love and devotion your dog gives to you, the balance to the perfect dog/human relationship can get off to a barking good start if you follow the below...
1) Hands off my Dog! Every dog should have a collar with an ID tag that includes your address and phone number. In New Zealand your dog should also have the local council dog registration tag attached to the collar. New Zealand law also advocates the use of Microchipping. Using all of the above will ensure that if your dog has gotten lost, the chances of you finding each other again is greatly increased.
2) It's The Law Bruno! Most local councils have laws regarding the licensing of your dog, while some international states also have laws regarding vaccination for rabies. By ensuring you meet your legal requirements for your dog, you will be doing your best for your dog and your community.
3) Keep A Leash On Life! As a dog owner I'm sure it has happened to you before, you are out walking your dog, on leash, and next minute you and your darling dog are being bailed up by some bolshy canine that has no owner in sight, or a rather red-faced owner hollering for their dog to 'heel'! It's simple really; when you are off your property, keep your dog on leash for his safety. It is your legal responsibility to have your dog under control at all times, even when they are off leash!
4) Snuggle Up Lassie! Dogs like to have their own space as well. No matter if they live outside or in, your dog needs his own bed and space where he can 'chill out'. Outside dogs needs a secure yard or kennel (with secure run), while inside dogs need a space that is for them that has his own bed.
5) What's Up Doc? As much as your dog might disagree... but regular vet check-ups and sticking with your dogs vaccination and/or worming program are important for a healthy, happy pooch!
6) No More Dog Loving! I am a strong believer in neutering or spaying your dog, unless you are a serious, professional breeder! This is a routine surgery and will help your dog to live a longer, healthier life. It is also proven that de-sexing your pooch will result in fewer behaviour problems such as biting or wandering. There are enough unloved, abandoned puppies in this world without your (or me) contributing to this overpopulation problem.
7) Good Boy! Even if you don’t want to aspire to compete in obedience or agility, every dog and/or puppy will benefit from at least one series of positive training with a professional trainer or approved obedience club.
8) Yum! Yum! Yum! The benefits of feeding your dog a healthy, balanced diet approved by your vet is very important.
9) Run Sally! Run! All dogs benefit from exercise and it is important to ensure your dog receives a daily exercise routine that suits their personal fitness levels. Nothing is more enjoyable for any dog then a long, leisurely walk! Playing is also important; games of fetch should never be underrated!
10) I Love You Max! Be loving, patient and loyal with your faithful companion.
