Demodectic mange, also known as demodicosis, demodex and red mange is caused by a microscopic mite demodex canis. There are three species of Demodex mites that can infest dogs, the most common mite is Demodex canis.
All puppies raised normally by their mothers are exposed to this mite as mites are transferred from mother to pup during the first few days of life.
Healthy puppies and dogs usually live in harmony with these mites, unless conditions change to upset the natural balance of the dog’s health. If the dog becomes sick for some reason, the Demodex mites can multiply and cause serious skin disease.
This can lead to hair loss, itchiness of the scalp, skin rashes and fungal or yeast infection.
Usually the precursor to Demodectic mange is caused by immune deficiency, sickness or a setback following weaning. Healthy puppies and dogs are not susceptible to mange infestation beyond their normal tolerance, so it is very important to feed and supplement your dog with a healthy diet and to provide daily exercise.
Treatment options:
To protect and enhance your dog’s immune system, a daily supplement of New Zealand Deer Velvet will provide a balanced intake of essential nutrients.
When Demodectic mange has overtaken your dog’s normal tolerance level, and is causing a rash or hair loss and is clearly troubling your dog, it will need to be treated with an effective acaricide.
A natural and effective treatment for Demodectic mange is a cream or oil combining New Zealand Manuka and Australian Tea Tree essential oils.
These natural essential oils have proven to be an effective alternative to synthetic chemical compounds, and to be easily tolerated on the dog’s skin while reducing the Demodectic mange to tolerable levels.
Several methods can be used to apply Manuka and Tea Tree products; the oil blend can be added to the final rinse following the shampooing of your dog, which will leave a light residue of oil on the skin and coat of your dog, and a cream containing Manuka and Tea Tree oil can be applied to localized areas where the mange has caused hair loss.
The added advantage of using these natural products is that they also have a powerful antimicrobial effect, which will protect your pet from bacterial, fungal and yeast infection which can result from the mange infestation.
