Flea Allergy dermatitis is caused by antigens in the saliva of fleas and once your dog or cat has developed an allergy to flea bites he or she will always be sensitive to these bites.
Allergy dermatitis is very common problem amongst all breeds of dog and cat, usually during summer and fall when flea numbers are at their greatest.
Dogs with Flea Allergy Dermatitis will often scratch or bite around the base of the tail, which can lead to intense itchiness over the whole body if left untreated.
It does not take a major flea infestation to cause an allergy, even as little as one flea bite can induce an allergenic reaction in your dog. Flea Allergy dermatitis can result in hot spots mentioned in a previous article, and the treatment is the same.
Treatment options:
Because flea allergy dermatitis and hot spots are most commonly associated with parasitic infestation, it will be important to treat your dog for parasites at the same time as treating the hot spot infection.
Hair should be close clipped in areas where hot spots appear, and initially treated with Manuka and Tea Tree cream, which will help to eliminate any remaining parasites, and prevent further bacterial infection from developing.
This should be followed by applying Manuka UMF honey cream which will control any bacteria, fungi or yeasts that may be present, and greatly assist the healing process. Both of these products are natural formulations and will not subject your dog to further discomfort as can happen with some sensitive dogs skin when exposed to synthetic or steroid creams.
To protect and enhance your dog’s immune system if your dog is suffering from hot spots or moist dermatitis, a daily supplement of New Zealand Deer Velvet will provide a balanced intake of essential nutrients.
New Zealand Deer Velvet tablets also contain NZ Green-Lipped mussel extract which is rich in Omega-3 and very effective in helping to normalize skin function. Prevention of repeat of hot spot infection can be greatly assisted by a good grooming program and by eliminating fleas from the skin and coat.
