Dog Lice are very specific to their hosts, dogs and puppies, and not a problem with cross infestation to humans.
Some dog lice suck blood and can cause anemia in small breeds of dog and in puppies, others chew on and eat the skin of their host causing hair loss, and itching which can lead to bacterial and other skin problems.
Lice lay their eggs on the hair shaft and in this respect are similar to human head lice. They are generally only transmitted by direct contact with another infested dog, as they don’t survive off the dog for any length of time.
Dog lice are fairly easy to see, as well as the eggs which will be visible on the hair of the dog’s coat.
Treatment options:
A simple, effective and natural way to protect your puppy or dog from lice is to add Manuka and Tea Tree oil to the final rinse following shampooing of your dog. These natural essential oils are combined in a formula that will provide natural protection for your dog. A few drops can also be put on your dog’s leather collar which will support the rinsing method.
Manuka and Tea Tree oil also comes in a convenient cream formulation which can be applied lightly to your dogs coat before he or she meets up with other dogs to prevent the transfer of lice from another dog.
Using natural Manuka and Tea Tree products to control lice on your dog means that you won’t have to constantly use synthetic chemicals that can cause side effects in many sensitive dogs.
To protect and enhance your dog’s immune system especially if your dog is suffering from anemia, caused by sucking lice, a daily supplement of New Zealand Deer Velvet will provide a balanced intake of essential nutrients.
