Seborrhea in dogs is skin that is very flakey caused by accelerated production of new skin cells, similar to psoriasis in humans. This can be accompanied by excess secretion from sebaceous oil glands in the hair follicles.
There are three types of Seborrhea in dogs; Seborrhea sicca, or dry seborrhea, which is only scaly. Seborrhea oleosa, or oily seborrhea, which has scales as well as excess oil production often accompanied by a strong smell, and Seborrheic dermatitis with greasiness and flaking, and the area will be inflamed.
The greasy excess oil production becomes infected with a fungus which causes the smell. Your dog will often be seen scratching and licking more than usual.
Treatment options:
A very simple and safe way to treat your dog or puppy for Seborrhea is with a natural cream formulated with New Zealand Manuka essential oil, or by using Manuka oil diluted in a sweet almond base.
Manuka oil has shown outstanding results in controlling Seborrhea in both in-vitro and in-vivo testing on both humans and dogs, and is a highly recommended treatment for dog Seborrhea.
Shampooing your dog with a medicated shampoo will help as will adding Manuka oil to the final rinse.
Another feature of Manuka oil is that it is also highly effective in controlling gram positive bacteria, so it is a very useful product to have on hand for any skin infection that your dog or puppy might suffer from.
Products containing New Zealand Manuka oil also provide an effective alternative to synthetic chemical based products, which have been known to cause allergies in sensitive breeds of dog.
To protect and enhance your dog’s immune system if your dog is suffering from Seborrhea, a daily supplement of New Zealand Deer Velvet will provide a balanced intake of essential nutrients. New Zealand Deer Velvet tablets also contain NZ Green-Lipped mussel extract which is rich in Omega-3 and very effective in helping to normalize skin function.
